WOODLAND CEMETERY BENCH – Stockholm
A competition for new outdoor furniture was held to commemorate the centenary of the Woodland Cemetery in Stockholm designed by Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz. The idea was to make a piece of furniture that was not only comfortable but also light and easy to move around, as an ephemeral rather than a fixed addition to the historic site. The bench has a simple structure of round galvanised steel profiles. The seat, backrest and armrests are made of cork, a material that is naturally impermeable to liquids – an important feature to consider in the context of the local climate. The stool is a one-seat variation of the bench, with a backrest in the same darker shade of cork as the bench armrests.
