TEMPORARY MUSEUM – Antwerp

Due to an ongoing renovation, the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp is exhibited in a Temporary Museum, located in the nearby Queen Fabiola Hall. A single rectangular full-height volume is inserted in this irregular hall, so that its longer side stretches the length of the existing colonnade entrance, while its shorter side extends to the limits of the room. This temporary structure is divided into four rooms of varying widths, each with two sliding doors on opposite sides. It can be perceived both as a full volume and as a sequence of spaces. The interior walls have integrated doors enabling diagonal crossing. The walls’ inclined upper sections, follow the capitals of the incorporated columns of the existing structure. Both the residual gallery space and the stained plywood structure serve as exhibition surfaces.
