MEDIA HOUSE (VRT) – Brussels

The headquarters of Flemish Radio Television (VRT) was intended to seed the development of a new neighbourhood in the east of Brussels. Given that a rather small plot was allocated to the complex programme, the building forms a compact block of three stacked volumes. They perform almost independently, as each one is both flexible and specific enough to accommodate a distinct set of functions. A round base set atop a sunken garage and warehouse is organised as a sequence of parallel strips containing entrances, public areas and studios. The square box above cantilevers to create a sheltered public space. It is made up of three double-height floors of open-plan editing suites. Four open atria cut through the volume. At the top of this composition sits a 40m office tower. As a solitary object the building creates its own context, dominating the vast developing area.
