OFFICE 131

HOUSING COMPLEX – Antwerp

Housing Complex (Cadix) is an apartment building on four levels with 11 units and 2 commercial spaces. The building is a part of a collective design of a building block amongst four architectural practices. The project formulates a nuanced answer to the current question of sustainable living, on the edge of the city. The block creates an inner courtyard, providing a space away from the city, while the flush, highly reflective facades facing the water edge of the Escault river engages with its surroundings. In OFFICE’s building, large cantilevered balconies break up the static, rigorous facade and reference the warehouse typology with projections reaching out towards the water. Generous window openings and double doors between the rooms allow for a great sensation of both volume and flexibility of use. The project complies with the requirements of Passivhaus for minimizing the energy consumption of future inhabitants.
